According to the Oral Health Foundation, a whopping 66% of people in the UK have considered whitening their teeth at some point. That’s more than half the country!
So it’s no surprise that one of the most common questions I get from patients is:
“Is teeth whitening safe?”
The short answer? Absolutely! As long as you do it the right way.
So… what’s the right way?
The Truth About Whitening Toothpastes
Walk into any supermarket and you’ll see shelves crammed with “whitening” toothpastes promising a celebrity smile. But here’s the deal, they don’t actually change the natural colour of your teeth.
What they can do is scrub away surface stains from your morning coffee or afternoon tea. The catch? Many of them use abrasive ingredients that, if overused, can wear down your enamel.
And when enamel gets thin, the yellowish dentin underneath starts to peek through, making your teeth look more yellow!
Use whitening toothpaste sparingly. It’s fine for a little brightening boost, but long-term daily use can damage the enamel of your teeth.
What about whitening strips?
Some whitening strips work, some… not so much.
Here’s the golden rule: the only ingredient that actually whitens tooth colour is hydrogen peroxide.
If the strips contain it (in a safe amount), you might see results. If they don’t, they are definitely not going to whiten your teeth.
Beware of cheap online kits which sometimes contain chlorine dioxide (yes, the same stuff used to disinfect swimming pools). It’s way too harsh for your teeth and can permanently damage your enamel. In the UK, over-the-counter products can only legally have up to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide; which is safe, but slow. At that strength, it could take up to 6 months to see a difference.
The Safest & Most Effective Whitening
For the best results, skip the random internet kits and get a prescription at-home whitening system from your dentist.
Here’s how it works:
- We take an impression or scan of your teeth to make custom trays.
- You get a prescription whitening gel (usually 3%–6% hydrogen peroxide).
- You wear the trays for a couple of hours a day or overnight, depending on your plan.
- We check your progress and adjust if needed.
Results? You could see a whiter smile in as little as 2 weeks.
Bonus: The trays can last for years, so all you’ll need in the future is a top-up gel prescription which is usually every 2 years.
The “Wedding in a Week” Option
Need instant results for a big event? In-chair whitening with your dentist is the fastest way which can give you good results in just 15 minutes!
It uses a much higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide (don’t worry, it’s safe when applied professionally) for a quick boost.
I’m not a huge fan of these because of their potential to cause temporary sensitivity on the teeth but if you want quick results, this is the best way!
